Interaction on clean food, healthy diet

In the wake of the recent raids on eateries working under unhygienic conditions and increasing complaints over the quality of food supplied by hotels, the Corporation is organising an open discussion on Tuesday at the Ernakulam Town Hall. The major aim of the open forum is to formulate an apt plan to ensure clean, hygienic and unadulterated food for all.

“We are providing a platform for the officials  concerned with food quality checking, representatives of Hotel and Restaurant Association, legal experts, Vegetable and Fruits Promotion Council representatives and the public to interact with each other and discuss the steps that can be taken to ensure quality of food supplied through hotels,” said Health Standing Committee chairman T K Ashraf.

Mayor Tony Chammany, Deputy Mayor B Bhadra, Corporation secretary Ajit Patil and the standing committee chairmen of the Corporation will also take part in the forum that will begin by 10 am.

In the recent raids, the Corporation had served closure notice on several hotels that were unhygienic. In some hotels, the officials found out that the drainage system was faulty and food was kept uncovered in the kitchen while in some other hotels the gutter and the sink were overflowing with dirty water.  “The preparation of food under hygienic conditions is equally important as the quality of the materials used for cooking. Following the raids, office-bearers of the Hotels and Restaurants Association had raised complaints that the Corporation is targeting them for no reason. Now, we believe that they will actively take part in the discussions and will come up with a confirmation on safety food,” Ashraf said.
