MANGALORE: Union Minister for Civil Aviation and Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi on Sunday promised International Airport status to Mangalore Airport in the ‘near future’.After declaring Mangalore Dasara open at Kudroli Gokarnanatheshwara temple, he said that he understood the need for announcing Mangalore Airport as an international airport. “Such changes cannot be realised in a day and needs sometime. But, I promise that the new status will be announced in the near future,” he assured. He was responding to demands from former Union minister B Janardana Poojary who wished to see more foreign tourists in Mangalore Dasara to claim it as an International festival. The Civil Aviation Minister said Mangalore Airport had opened its doors to international flights. Only the international tag needs to be announced, he said.He said that the proposal for runway extension was pending with his department. The Minister visited the temple and expressed his happiness on witnessing the idols on nine different avatars of Durga. He revealed that he was a follower of Narayana Guru and his principles. Janardana Poojary explained the history of Navaratri celebrations and Mangalore Dasara during Vayalar Ravi’s visit to the temple.
