KOCHI: It was a mixed reaction from the IT people to the UDF government’s new liquor policy that was tabled in the Cabinet last day. Most of the people active in the sector opined that the new policy wouldn’t create any impact on them. The new regulation of fixing an age limit for drinkers may not affect the IT sector as the majority of the people join IT companies at the age of 22. “Most of the new hands in IT companies are those who pass out BTech and aged around 22 years. So the government’s idea of discouraging the use of liquor will not have an impact on the people in the sector,” said Sreekanth, a software developer.Another software engineer welcomed the new liquor policy as Bevco outlets in the state would remain open late into the night. “The government’s decision to open the wine shops late into night is a welcome move. Henceforth, we need not rush to the outlets before 9 pm,” he said. Most of the IT professionals believe that   regulations in the liquor policy will not keep  people away from drinking. “Those who consume liquor regularly would try and get hold of it from somewhere irrespective of age and cost. So such regulations are futile," he said. As far as the IT sector is concerned most IT professionals earn more than Rs 25,000 per month. "With such good money most of us can afford to drink from the best hotels in the city. No one can restrict a regular drinker from liquor,” said Jenny James, an IT professional.
