THIURVANANTHAPURAM: Government Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) numbering 34 across the state are all set for a makeover with the setting up of virtual classrooms, which are planned to improve the quality of education and enhance employability of those undergoing various courses in the institutes at the global level. Announcing the Rs 2.35-crore project which is an ambitious initiative being implemented with the help of Keltron, Labour Minister Shibu Baby John said that the latest technological advances should be incorporated in the curriculum and basic communication skills should also be enhanced.‘’ITIs are technical institutions which are frequented by the weaker sections of society’’ he told mediapersons here.Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will launch the new virtual classroom facility at the Women’s ITI at Kozhikode on May 17 at 10 a m.He will also launch a job portal - skill jobs.com - and make the official declaration of the women’s ITI getting the ISO certification. Through the new facility, all the 34 ITIs will stay connected to the latest technological developments across the globe through lectures by experts and visualised training. “Many organisations like KERA, the alumni association of Keralite engineering students based in the Gulf, have evinced their interest to provide training”, the minister said.A special soft skill course using the virtual classroom facility is also planned. For the nearly 47,000 students studying in these ITIs, the new job website will be a real boon. All job aspirants can register for free and post their resumes in the site, which will be linked to the stateowned Overseas Development and Employment Promotion Consultants (ODEPEC) which has tie-ups with all major recruiters in the Gulf region. The employers can directly access the websites and look for qualified hands who have registered on the site.“Though Kerala is the first state in the country to launch ITIs in the early seventies which brought technical education to the doorstep of the underprivileged, the state is lagging behind other states due to overdose of student politics on ITI campuses here. This has to be changed.A biometric attendance system for students, with a corresponding mobile alert on the cell phones of parents is planned to streamline the attendance of students,” the minister said.
