New Delhi: North Korea's first communications satellite is in earth's orbit and according to state controlled media it is broadcasting the revolutionary songs of President Kim Jong-Il and his father Kim Il-Sung.
The satellite dubbed Kwang-myong-song 2 was launched into space on board the three stage Unha rocket. Analysts say, it is another name for the very same Taepodong launcher on which North Korea's nuclear warhead sits.
America predictably condemned the launch. Washington warned that the satellite launch is only a cover for Pyongyang to test the ability of its nuclear missiles to reach Alaska.
“To prevent the spread of these weapons rules must be binding, violations must be punished. Now is the time of a strong international response,” said US President Barack Obama.
President Obama was joined by Japan and Britain.
"I've ordered the safety of all be confirmed immediately and that we have strengthened our information gathering network and asked that we all cooperate in sharing information. That is all I can say at this point," said Japan Prime Minister Taro Aso.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon expressed regrets. The Security Council will meet later on Sunday in New York to consider what steps to take to punish North Korea for violating security council rules.
Only North Korea's allies Russia and China called for calm and restraint. They are expected to oppose demands for fresh sanctions against the North but maybe willing to go along with tightening of existing sanctions.
But all this only after South Korea has positively confirmed that the North Korean's did launch a satellite.
