Jharkhand Governor Syed Ahmed on Tuesday condemned the Maoist attack on a police team in Pakur district and termed it a "cowardly act".

"It's a cowardly act by the extremists," the Governor said while expressing grief at the death of the police personnel, including Superintendent of Police Amarjeet Balihar.

"Sacrifice of these brave soldiers will not go in vain. This is a cowardly act by the naxalites and there is no place for violence in a democratic system. Everyone should join the mainstream instead of indulging in such barbaric and grisly attack," he said.

Stating that such types of attack would not affect the morale of the police, he said, "We are all with the family members of the martyred police personnel."

The Governor has directed DGP Rajeev Kumar and Principal Secretary of Home department N N Pandey to visit the site to take stock of the situation.

Meanwhile, several political leaders issued statements condemning the Maoist attack.

In the last 12 years, Maoist violence has claimed lives of several policemen, civilians and political leaders like CPI (ML Liberation) MLA Mahendra Prasad Singh, JDU MLA Ramesh Singh Munda and JMM MP Sunil Mahato.
