New Delhi: In a late night development, two JNU students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya – facing sedition charges – left the university campus and surrendered before the Delhi police.
Sources said they surrendered at the Vasant Vihar police station and were later taken to the South Campus police station for questioning.
Around 9.30 pm, all the five JNU students, facing similar charges, gathered in front of the administrative building. A large number of other University students too gathered to extend their support to them.
Both of them were escorted by the JNU security personnel to an undisclosed location and later they surrendered before the Delhi Police.
Sources said they will be produced at the Patiala House Court Wednesday afternoon where the police are likely to ask for their custody.
Speaking to CNN-IBN, Umar's lawyer Kamini Jaiswal said, "I Hope Delhi Police will follow the procedure and produce both Umar and Anirban under tight security."
There were speculations that they will surrender before the police on Tuesday night to avoid media.
Earlier in the day, Delhi High Court told the two JNU students, Umar and Anirban that they must surrender before the police and agreed to listen to their plea for security.
Umar's lawyer reportedly told the court that both wanted to surrender, but at a 'requested place and time' out of fear of threat to their lives.
The matter was shared by Umar's lawyer with a DCP who was present at the hearing. After going through the request letter (containing place and time of surrender), the DCP objected to the location.
Umar along with 4 others – who have been booked for sedition by the Delhi Police for allegedly raising anti-India slogans during an Afzal Guru event - resurfaced at the JNU campus on Sunday night and slammed the central government for 'gagging the voice of students'.
