New Delhi: It has been four years since the brutal rape and murder of a 23-year-old physiotherapist shook the nation and led to tougher laws on crime against women.
Six men were taken into custody — five adults were convicted and sentenced to death while one minor was sent to a remand home from where he was released last year.
One of the convicts killed himself in prison and the execution of the rest has been stayed for now.
In an exclusive interview to Network18, Nirbhaya's mother says justice will not be done till the rapists are hanged.
Q: Do you think justice will be done to your daughter?
Mother: I can’t think of justice unless the culprits who killed my daughter are hanged. As of now, justice is served only on paper. I can’t say for how long we have to fight this case.
Q: Has your life become normal after that tragic incident?
Mother: It’s like our life has come to a standstill. I can’t say whether our life will ever return to normal. Our struggle has been continuing over the last four years.
Q: Four years after the Nirbhaya incident, do you still get the same kind of support from the public?
Mother: People still support our struggle. There are some organizations which regularly contact us on the issue. I am being called whenever some events are organized.
Q: Government has brought in strict laws to counter crimes against women. Do you think these laws have worked?
Mother: I don’t think these laws have been effective, keeping in view the continuing harassment and crimes against women. We are yet to witness a drastic change in the law and order situation. Laws won’t be effective unless they are implemented strictly.
Q: What did your daughter tell you.. which you won’t forget?
Mother: My daughter’s condition in her last moment was very painful. She wasn’t able to speak much due to her deteriorating condition. Till today, her words, ‘Sorry Mummy I have given you lot of problems’ are echoing in my ears. My daughter was a fighter. She knew karate but could not save herself as she was overpowered.
