BANGALORE: Magsaysay awardee Dr Harish Hande, Arjuna award winners Tejaswinibai and Ramesh Tikaram, and Dr Basavanenaiah are among the fifty dignitaries who have been named for the Kannada Rajyotsava awards 2011. The awards will be presented by Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda at a function scheduled to be held in Bangalore on November 1, which is also the state formation day.Addressing the media here on Sunday, Kannada and Culture Minister Govind Karjol said that as announced by the Chief Minister, the number of awardees is restricted to fifty. Barring the newly formed Yadgir district, representation was given to all other districts in the state while shortlisting names of the recipients. Stating that selectors had a tough time shortlisting the candidates who have contributed to society in various fields, Minister Govind Karjol said that as many as 4,000 applications were received by the government, of which only fifty persons were selected this year. Belgaum’s Mahatma Gandhi Khadi Gramodyog Sangh and Shanthivana Trust in Dakshina Kannada district are selected under the association category for its rich contribution. The award carries `1 lakh prize, gold medal weighing 20 grams and a citation.
