Bengaluru: In a major development, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Karnataka Police has arrested Lokayukta extortion racket kingpin and son of Lokayukta Y Bhaskara Rao, Y Ashwin Rao. According to reports he was arrested in Auranbad district of Maharashtra.
Some claim that he was arrested near Hyderabad in Telangana. Ashwin Rao is the prime accused in extortion racket which allegedly collected over Rs.200 crores from more than 109 bureaucrats and others in the last two years. However, the police are yet to make the arrest public.
According to sources, Lokayukta Bhaskara Rao might resign after the arrest of his son. They claim that he is talking to former Advocate General of Karnataka Ashok Harnahalli for an anticipatory bail.
The police have already arrested Lokayukta PRO Syed Riaz after he returned from Saudi Arabia. He is accused of extorting money on behalf of the son of Lokayukta.
Three others including a journalist and an RTI activist have already been arrested in connection with the scam. Civil society and political parties are demanding Lokayukta Bhaskara Rao’s resignation and arrest.
Justice Bhaskara Rao was the chief justice of Karnataka High Court.
