Srinagar: The strategic Jammu-Srinagar Highway was opened for one-way traffic on Friday afternoon after remaining closed for 13 days due to landslides triggered by heavy rains in Jammu and Kashmir.
"The Jammu-Srinagar highway was thrown open today and nearly 2,000 stranded Srinagar-bound vehicles would reach here by this evening," Kashmir divisional commissioner, Basharat Ahmad Dhar said.
Hundreds of trucks carrying essential supplies for the Kashmir Valley are also expected to reach here on Friday.
"This would ease the supplies shortages in the Valley, especially of fresh vegetables, poultry products, milk and mutton," Dhar said.
The highway, the only land connection of the Valley with the rest of the country, is also the only supply artery for the millions of locals.
During the last 23 days, the highway was temporarily opened for just eight days due to a tough road blockade at Panthal near Ramban in the Jammu region.
"Heavy recent rains in the area triggered further landslides at Panthal causing severe setback to our restoration efforts," said an engineer.
Meanwhile, another day of bright sunshine in Jammu and Kashmir eased the flood situation in the Valley.
