KOCHI: VD Satheesan who represents Paravoor constituency in the State Assembly is a politician who likes to keep up with the times. Which is why he’s taken to new-age social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, and believes it’s a perfect way to stay connected with the youth.“I feel there is a generational gap now. It’s important to narrow it down and I find the new media very useful in this regard. I became  part of Facebook and Twitter in a very conscious way,” he says, talking to us from his Paravoor residence.Besides his attempt to stay connected with the youth, Satheesan has half a dozen personal interests of his own. He is an avid reader, nature enthusiast and an active trekker. Ruskin Bond’s ‘Tales of the Open Road’ is his recent favourite. “It takes the reader through a pilgrimage to the Himalayas, Badrinath, Ganges and Darjeeling. Alvin Toffler is another writer, who I have read a lot,” he says.Trekking is a particularly favourite activity of his. “It’s really thrilling to go into the depths of the forest and explore,” he says, adding that he takes out time for it even during busy days. On the political front, Satheesan has faced a fair bit of challenge, but it has helped him to emerge stronger, he believes. He was snubbed and omitted from from the list of Congress ministers in the Oommen Chandy cabinet. It no doubt upset him greatly. “I also felt that merit was being ignored,” he says.Though he has been unable to continue his vocation as a lawyer, he says he keeps a close watch on vital judgments that come out. “I am in close contact with the legal fraternity and update myself on all the relevant judgments. My legal background has helped me a lot in politics to present my case effectively in the assembly and outside,” he tells us.Finally about his constituency, Satheesan says he has tried to ensure that welfare programmes reach every corner of Paravoor. He also hopes that Paravoor can be turned into a satellite township. Aimed at bringing a socio-economic change, he says that he is looking into more educational and job oriented programmes for the youth.
