Khadi and other village based industries can play a pivotal role in providing employment to youths in disaster affected areas of Uttarakhand, Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna has said.
Tourism which is the mainstay of the state's economy was hit hard by the June calamity which had rendered thousands of youth jobless, Bahuguna said at National Khadi and Village Industries Exhibition in Dehradun on Wednesday.
By devising a fresh marketing strategy for Khadi products with emphasis on new designs and techniques, it could play a central role in providing employment to jobless youth in calamity hit areas of Uttarakhand, he said.
"We need to give a modern form to Khadi through a fresh marketing strategy to popularise Khadi products. Emphasis should be laid on new designs and techniques.
"Khadi and village based industries could play a pivotal role in providing employment to the youth in disaster hit affected areas of Uttarakhand," Bahuguna said.
He welcomed the exhibitors from outside the state and expressed hope that the presenters would learn better about each others' products.
The event, which got underway in Dehradun on November 18 and will go on till December 12, has exhibitors from Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu Kashmir, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh. It is offering 40 per cent discount to buyers on each Khadi product.
