Who said grown ups should be the only ones who need to worry about their fashion sense? A mother of two daughters, chartered accountant Payal Bahl was in awe of the pretty lilliputian dresses she saw on the racks of stores abroad. She decided she had to create a similar market in India. “The way you see kids dressing up these days, it’s very cosmopolitan,” Bahl states. “I wanted to create a line that is modern, but also in tune with our Indian sensibilities.” Hence the founding of her Noida-based company, N&N Design-Studio and the launch of her first line of clothing for little girls. “I call it Chiquitita (Spanish for little girl),” she laughs, “as you can tell I’m an Abba fan.”
The collection will be launched this evening at Evoluzione on Khader Nawaz Khan Road. Split into two colour palettes, the line offers outfits that are soft and breezy and another one which is vibrant and festive for the upcoming Deepavali season. Elaborates Bahl, “While designing each piece, we kept in mind what children like.” So balloon sleeves on the blouses, subtle hints of gold on lehengas and floral gota work glamourises the Chiquitita collection. The N&N managing director says, “We have ensured that these festive outfits are light and did not compromise on comfort in any way.” So thin soft linings with skin-friendly fabrics, embroidery which is layered from the inside of the garment (to prevent any itching), arm holes with comfortable fittings and most important of all , pyjamas that come with an adjustable waist, were kept in mind while designing for the growing youngster. Is there a little boys collection in the making yet? Bahl smiles and responds, “We have started working on a few pieces, but we don’t have a full collection ready yet and adds that they may be ready by next Diwali.”
(The Chiquitita collection will be showcased today (Oct ober 4) at Evoluzione, Khader Nawaz Khan Road at 4pm. For details, contact 044 28333627.)
