London: For those wondering how actress Nicole Kidman managed to tie the knot with beau Keith Urban without getting the required annulment, from ex-hubby Tom Cruise, that the Catholic Church insists upon, here’s a clue: Kidman was able to get married because the Vatican didn’t recognise her 10-year union to Cruise in the first place.
According to Father Coleman, the priest who married Kidman and Urban in a traditional Catholic ceremony on Sunday, since the Catholic Church does not recognise Scientology as a religion, in the eyes of the Church Kidman was not religiously married.
"The Catholic Church sets down requirements to have a valid Catholic marriage. In the case of Nicole's first marriage, those requirements were not fulfilled," the BBC quoted him, as saying.
So, all the Oscar winning actress had to do to wed Urban was obtain a licence from the Catholic Church saying that she was legally free to marry, and that the Church had not recognised her first marriage.
Kidman's first marriage to Cruise in 1991 was performed in the Church of Scientology, as Cruise is a scientologist.
The Catholic Church considers the divorce granted to them in 2001 legal rather than religious.
