Anti-Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) protestors hoisted black flags at Idinthakarai and nearby coastal villages in the district on Wednesday.
Recently, the People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) announced that it would observe August 15 as ‘black day’.
On Wednesday, the local community of Idinthakarai and nearby villages hoisted black flags at their houses, boats, shops and public areas.
Fishermen from the region also stayed off the sea.
At Idinthikarai, some protestors carried a coffin, symbolising the death of democracy in the village, on a procession and burnt it on the outskirts.
The authorities have not given basic information about the KKNPP to local residents, PMANE coordinator S P Udayakumar told Express.
Alleging that the opinions of the locals were not sought, Udayakumar said an agreement made with the Russian government was also not shared with the people.
We commemorated Independence Day as ‘black day’ to bring to light these undemocratic and unconstitutional activities, he said.
