CHENNAI: Manithaneya Makkal Katchi on Friday said the argument that the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant would augment the power availability in Tamil Nadu was based on “wrong information”.Participating in the discussion on the motion of thanks to the Governor’s address, MMK leader MH Jawahirullah said the Unit I of the KKNPP was estimated to generate 1000 MW. However, actual power generation would be only around 700 MW, he claimed. Of this, 35 MW would go to the power requirements of the plant, residences of those working there and the neighbouring areas, he said. Of this, Tamil Nadu would be getting just 299.25 MW. Again, after losses to be incurred during distribution would be 20 per cent. As such, the state would be getting only 240 MW. Since the total power requirement of the State stood at 14,285 MW, the quantum of power to be received from KKNPP would be a negligible 1.75 per cent, he argued.“But for getting this least quantum of power, the people of Tamil Nadu had to pay a heavy price in terms of environmental aspects,” Jawahirullah said. The report of the experts committee appointed by the Centre had failed to alleviate the fears of the locals. The Centre should stop giving religious colour to the issue, he added.
