CHENNAI: The CPM staged a demonstration in front of the Lankan embassy here, urging the Centre to pressurise the neighbouring country to bring about a political solution, on Monday. Speaking to reporters, party State General Secretary G Ramakrishnan said that the Lankan forces used heavy artillery in the last phase of the war with the LTTE and Lankan Tamils who raised their voice were deported in white vans and lodged in prison and tortured.“Sri Lankan forces killed thousands of civilians besides holding over three lakh Lankan Tamils in camps with barbed wire fences,” he said. “Hospitals were shelled and the critically injured were denied treatment by the army,” Ramakrishnan continued. “These war crimes should be probed and those responsible should be subjected to stringent actions,” he demanded. On the present scenario, Ramakrishnan said that 11 rounds of talks with the Tamil National Alliance and Sri Lankan government were in vain and Tamil regions were still under military control. India should pressurise Lanka to arrive at a political solution, he said. The State General Secretary also opined that CPM would join the chorus of Western Countries moving a resolution against Sri Lanka for its failure on reconciliation, at Geneva.
