BANGALORE: One of the most important roads and a hub for many commercial activities, MG Road is an arterial road in any city.Likewise, the city’s MG Road is home to many multiplexes, restaurants and posh stores along with multinational companies that have made this address their head quarters.Despite having a reputation of grandeur, it is unfortunate that its importance is coupled and subjugated by many problems that are faced by Bangaloreans on a daily basis.Broken roads, leaking manholes, congested stretches, craters on the road and the mess left over by the BMRCL’s metro construction have become synonymous with the road. The latest entrant on the list of woes faced by commuters on MG Road is a manhole opposite a multinational company.Dirty water has been gushing out of the manhole like a volcanic eruption for more than three days in a row, yet it has missed the eye of the concerned authorities. To add to it, there is now passage for the water to drain out, as a result it has been flowing from the manhole towards Trinity junction for the last few days. There is a white flex sheet that has been put up at the Old Madras Road and Trinity Church Road junction that notifies the commuter about BWSSB’s repair work in progress. As usual, the pace of work is painstakingly slow. What makes matters worse is that the water has been collecting in the indented parts of the road which in turn emanates a foul stench.A similar problem had cropped up on the other side of the road near Trinity Junction, where yet another manhole was over flowing for days until the block was cleared and the problem was rectified. The sad saga of Mahatma Gandhi Road continuous endlessly. While some matters had been dealt. The same problems kept reemerging time and again due to the temporary measures taken up by the civic agencies. The patch work at the Trinity Circle is a classic example of efforts by the Palike gone to waste. The BBMP has patch worked the same stretch a number of times over the last few months. They have filled the potholes yet again with jelly and stones.Only time can tell if this time their efforts pay off.Commuter speakJaykishan, an employee at one of the multinational companies on MG Road said, “Over the last few years the road has developed many problems. While motorists deal with the problems related to bad roads and potholes, pedestrians have to conform to the stench from the leaking manholes.Water has been leaking from this manhole for three successive days.” He further added that the area has a perpetual problem when it comes to leaking drains.“There was some BWSSB repair work that was in progress a while ago, after that was the overfl ow at Trinity Circle and now dirty water is oozing out of a manhole on MG Road. This only emphasises the lackadaisical attitude of the authorities,” he complains.Authority speakBWSSB executive engineer for the area, Ninge Gowda was oblivious to the situation on MG Road. When questioned why it had not been dealt with until now he said, ‘‘It is a recurring problem, they get blocked easily. However, at the moment we have our hands tied with work that has been in progress on Richmond Road. The leaking manhole on MG Road will be fixed only later,” he said.
