CHENNAI: Fourteen unmanned level crossings in the Chennai Division of the Southern Railway would be replaced by limited use subways.According to J Christopher Prabhakar, Sr Divisional Safety Officer, Chennai Division, Southern Railway, limited use subways are road under bridges with a height of 3.5 meters, which prevents the movement of gigantic lorries and trucks. “Of the 14, about 10 are coming up on the Chennai- Gudur Section and the rest are distributed on the Chengalpattu-Kancheepuram and Arakonam-Renigunta sections,” he added.A press release from the Southern Railway said a publicity campaign to educate the road users in connection with the International Level Crossing Awareness Day was organised in Kancheepuram-Arakkonam section on Wednesday. The release further said it is proposed to eliminate all the 60 unmanned level crossings in the Chennai Division by 2015.
