BALASORE: Concerned over frequent mishaps on the highways, the Centre had earlier asked the State Government to submit a report on the number of liquor outlets within 300 metres from the highways, following a direction from the Supreme Court.Accordingly, the government had asked the Excise superintendent to furnish the report mentioning the distance of liquor outlets from the highways. As per preliminary reports, there are 26 such outlets along NH-5 and NH-60 that pass through Balasore district and Seragarh-Nilagiri-Kaptipada-Medinapur State Highway 19. The outlets are at Markona, Jamjhadi, Soro, Bidu, Bahanaga, Khantapada, Kuruda, Bampada, Remuna Golai, Mangalpur, Velora, Haldipada and Laxmannath. “All these outlets selling foreign and country liquor are set up within nine to 50 metre distance from the highways barring one at Nilagiri which is 125 metres from the SH-19,” an excise official said. The prime objective behind setting up of these outlets was revenue generation.In-charge Excise Superintendent Pinaki Patnaik said the report has been submitted to the State Government and its notification is awaited for further action.
