New Delhi: A criminal complaint against the recent high profile Elizabeth Hurley-Arun Nayar wedding has been admitted in the Jodhpur low court.
The complaint filed under section 295 A of the IPC terms the wedding to have amounted to hurting religious sentiment.
The petition was filed by Vishnu Khandelwal, a 44 year-old resident of
Jodhpur. Khandelwal claims that since the couple were already married in a church in England, their Hindu wedding in India would be legally considered null and void.
The next date of hearing for the case is March 21.
Khandelwal's lawyer, Hastimal Saraswat says, "Arun Nayar and Elizabeeth Hurley have celebrated their honeymoon and have also attended functions as a married couple. Then why was there a need to come to Jodhpur and get married in the Indian way?"
"There seems to be a deep-rooted conspiracy in this entire issue. The couple has been, through their act, trying to canvass for the spread of Christianity and utilizing the Hindu marriage they have hurt the people's sentiments. This is a punishable offence according to the Indian Penal code," said Saraswat was quoted by news agency ANI as further saying.
Liz Hurley married Indian businessman Arun Nayar on Friday in a lavish ceremony after their civil wedding last week at a castle in England.
The wedding sparked some controversy in Rajasthan's state assembly, where a communist politician dubbed the event a symbol of feudalism.
