MYSORE: When the cattle of Mahalingakatte returned home after grazing on Saturday, it meant the end of another normal day at the village. But it all changed when the villagers saw whom the cattle brought home with them that evening. It was another docile, four-legged creature alright, but only it had a small grey trunk swinging in front.A six-month-old elephant calf that strayed away from its herd, trailed the cattle herd and reached Mahalingakatte village. The young elephant was treated with love and care by the villagers. The villagers offered the elephant calf tender coconut, milk and even performed puja before informing the Range Forest Officer.RFO Sridhar rushed to village and shifted it to the range forest office in Hanur where it was provided glucose, milk and tender coconut. DFO Mamtaz Javeed is yet to decide on whether to release the calf back into the forest or hand it over to the zoo.
