BANGALORE: A division bench of the High Court on Wednesday sentenced a man to  rigorous life imprisonment for murdering his wife ten years ago. The accused, Anupam Mishra, had murdered his wife Bashwathi Deb, a student of B-Pharm at MS Ramaiah College of Pharmacy in the city.The bench comprising Justice N Ananda and Justice Govindaraju, hearing an application filed by the State Government challenging the trial court’s order acquitting Mishra, in the murder case, set aside the lower court order and sentenced the accused to life imprisonment putting an end to the ten-year -old case.The duo, studying in same college, had married on December 25, 2000. Soon after the marriage, Mishra became unhappy and suspicious over his wife’s behaviour as he suspected her of infidelity and many times told her to mend her ways. When his suspicion became stronger, he murdered and admitted her to a hospital by Mishra stating that she suffered injuries after she had a fall in April 28, 2001. At the hospital, Dr  Mali Manjunath who attended her had declared her brought dead and the postmortem report revealed that she was sexually assaulted and the later the investigation pointed at Mishra. When the Yeshwanthpur police began the probe, the postmortem report revealed that she was assaulted sexually and tortured before her death. When questioned, Mishra said that she was gang-raped by four persons. The matter was entrusted to Corps of Detectives (Then CoD, now Criminal Intelligence Department-CID).  During the probe, the CoD  found that her husband Mishra had murdered her after sexually assaulting her. However, he was acquitted for lack of evidence by Judge Neginhal. In the High Court, during the marathon hearing which went on for two days, Public Prosecutor N S Sampangiramaiah pointed out that the contention of gang-rape was false and on the day of the event, the victim was very much present in his room.He also pointed out to the changing version of the accused and sought to quash the petition. The division bench set aside the lower court order and sentenced the accused to rigorous life imprisonment.On the day of murder in April 28, 2001, he was found stopping vehicles on the road by the Hoysala attached to Yeshwanthpur, when questioned, he said that his friend is injured and he need to take her to the hospital. The police helped him get an autorickshaw.
