ATHAGARH: Sweta Dalei (48) of Kandarpur village here was swept away in the Mahanadi flood water while bathing on Sunday afternoon. Dalei has not be traced despite attempts by the administration. In another incident, two elephants, marooned in Amangei Island for a fortnight, reportedly fell into the river on Sunday night. They were rescued from the river edge at Anantapur on Monday morning by DFO Sudarshan Behera and his team. The villagers held the Forest Department responsible for the inconvenience. The elephants were reportedly forced to take shelter on the island to escape the flood water on their way from Damapada to Athagarh. The department had deployed a motorboat here to keep a vigil on the marooned elephants and provide them fodder. Blaming the department officials for dereliction of duty, the villagers alleged that the elephants were left to fend for themselves. The swirling flood water made the task of attending to the elephants difficult, which led the animals to the river bank looking for fodder and water. The elephants fell into the river following a landslide and were swept away. The DFO said the rescued elephants would be driven away to the nearby jungle.
