Mild tremors hit Idukki district

KOCHI: A mild tremor having a magnitude of 3.8 on the Richter scale was reported at Wagamon in Idukki district on Saturday. Three other mild tremors of 3.1 magnitude were reported from different parts of the district as  aftershocks of the first quake.District Collector E Devadasan told ‘Express’ that no damage has been reported and the district administration was monitoring the situation. The Idukki Dam officials in Cheruthoni said the tremors were reported from Wagamon, Painavu, Panimattam, Moolamattam, Velliyamattam, Kattappana, Kulamavu, Elappara and Upputhara regions. The first tremor was reported at 1.09 pm. Later  tremors were reported at 1.15 pm, 2.15 pm and 3.15 pm from various parts of the district. The tremor with a magnitude of 3.8 was recorded by the Centre for Earth Science Studies (CESS), Thiruvananthapuram. “The epicentre of the quake was located north of Vellikkulam near Wagamon. The aftershocks of the quake were felt in other areas after a hour. The aftershocks were of a magnitude of 3.1 on the Richter scale,” CESS scientist P Radhakrishna said.
