New Delhi: The Centre is trying to get the Kohinoor diamond back from England through diplomatic channels after realising that legal means would not be of any use in getting the prized stone back.

According to sources, a top-level meeting was chaired by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on July 22 over the issue.

The Centre is likely to ask the UK government only for the Kohinoor and not for the other precious items which were also taken away by the Britishers before Independence.

The process of talks with UK will start after August 15. The Solicitor General of India is expected to submit a fresh affidavit in the Supreme Court saying that Modi government is committed to get the Kohinoor back from UK.

There will be a another meeting of the ministries to finalise the contents of the new affidavit.

The present government will counter the then prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru's speech in 1954 where he said that Kohinoor could not be brought back to India.

A few months ago, country’s law officers had told the SC that it was difficult to get the Kohinoor back as it was gifted to Queen Victoria by young Maharaja Duleep Singh. After a huge furore, government was forced to change its stand.
