Rome: Formula One has made the right move in deciding to switch to a V6 turbo engine from 2014, Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo said on Friday.
The Italian has been a prominent critic of plans to introduce a 'greener' 1.6 litre four cylinder engine from 2013 but that has been dropped in favour of a V6, which will replace the current V8.
"The choice of having a V6 turbo engine from 2014 is the right one and I am pleased to note that common sense prevailed," Montezemolo told the Ferrari website (www.ferrari.com) before flying to Japan.
"It shows we are working together without pointless counterproposals or diktat, if it leads to the best outcome for the good of this sport."
Montezemolo also changed his tune on the season so far, having been highly critical in May of the racing resulting from new rules and the frequent pitstops forced on teams by the Pirelli tyres.
Ferrari have yet to win in eight races this year, with Red Bull's world champion Sebastian Vettel victorious in six of them, but Fernando Alonso has finished two of the last three races as runner-up.
"I think that it's been a positive start to the season for Formula One," said Montezemolo.
"I have to say the races are all unpredictable and full of overtaking and interesting for the public, both in the grandstands and in front of the television, right to the end.
"That was one of the objectives this sport had set itself and I believe it has been reached," he added.
Montezemolo also congratulated Pirelli, who have replaced Japan's Bridgestone as sole provider and whose quicker-wearing tyres have had a major impact on strategy.
