Betul: Close to 350 women were allegedly asked to go through virginity and pregnancy tests during a mass marriage programme in Betul. Sources said that the tests were apparently ordered by the government officials.
The incident took place at Harad village in Betul, a tribal-dominated district. About 90 women who underwent these tests are tribals. The district administration has ordered a magisterial probe and a report will be submitted within seven days. District Collector Rajesh Prasad Misra, "There was no official order to conduct the tests. We have ordered a probe into it."
One of the women said, "I came here for my marriage. They said I cannot get married."
Meanwhile, demanding strict action against the officials, the Leader of Opposition in state Assembly Ajay Singh said that chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan should apologise to tribals and women over the incident.
Samajwadi Jan Parishad leader Anurag Modi said that the district collector can not wash off his hands by only ordering a probe into the matter as there was no possibility of conducting virginity test without his permission.
