The Madhya Pradesh government has decided to waive off electricity bills as on June 30, 2013, of domestic consumers who are below poverty line. A decision to this effect was taken on Tuesday at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, an official release said on Wednesday.
The decision will put a burden of Rs 225 crore on the state exchequer, it said adding that the government will provide funds as grant to power distribution companies against 50 per cent waiver of surcharge and remaining 50 per cent on waiver of original bill amount.
The consumers not enlisted in BPL category in the billing system of power distribution companies can avail this benefit by producing ration cards issued to them (including Antyodaya families). Total outstanding amount is Rs 564.68 crore. After deducting amount of surcharge worth Rs 114.93 crore, the basic outstanding amount comes to Rs 449.75 crore. Of this, the state government will bear Rs 225 crore.
