The Mumbai Metro-3 or Aqua Line, which opened to public on Monday, is using the train sets developed under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
Under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, 31 modern, lightweight trains have been built for Metro-3, each consisting of 8 cars with a capacity to carry 2,500 passengers. These state-of-the-art coaches, designed at Alstom’s engineering centre in Bengaluru, Karnataka, and manufactured at its state-of-the-art rolling stock facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh, showcase the country’s growing expertise in advanced manufacturing and engineering. So far, 24 train sets have already been delivered to the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL), with more on the way.
The coaches are packed with cutting-edge technology and innovative features, all designed to provide a world-class commuting experience for Mumbaikars. With over 1.6 million daily commuters expected to use the Metro-3, these trains will significantly ease the burden on the city’s public transport system.

ADVANCED SIGNALLING SYSTEMS, FACE RECOGNITION
One of the key features in the Metro-3 coaches is the driverless operation system, made possible by the latest generation of CBTC (Communications-Based Train Control) technology, known as Urbalis Forward.
This state-of-the-art system ensures high levels of automation (GOA4), allowing for fully autonomous train operations.
In addition to its automation, the trains are equipped with advanced signalling systems, automatic train supervision, and integrated platform screen doors (PSDs) to ensure safe and efficient operations.
The coaches also include a bidirectional video communication system that allows passengers to directly communicate with the Operations Control Centre (OCC) during emergencies. Other safety features include face recognition security CCTV cameras, smoke detectors, emergency intercoms and fire extinguishers. These systems, along with the computer-based interlocking technology, ensure that safety is prioritised for all passengers onboard.
PASSENGER CONVENIENCE, SUSTAINABILITY
The Aqua Line coaches reflect Mumbai’s vibrant energy and blend of global architectural influences. The coaches prioritise accessibility, featuring dedicated wheelchair spaces in each car for differently abled passengers. Inside, the trains offer a high interior density layout to maximise space while ensuring comfort for all commuters.
Passenger convenience is further enhanced by clear signage, multiple rows of grab rails, grab handles and support poles. There are also designated spaces for passengers carrying luggage, catering to the needs of Mumbai’s diverse commuting population. The large doors allow for quick and efficient passenger boarding and disembarking, as well as rapid evacuation during emergencies.

In keeping with global environmental standards, the Aqua Line coaches are designed with sustainability in mind. Each trainset is equipped with a regenerative braking system that reduces energy consumption and significantly lowers carbon emissions. The coaches are estimated to reduce overall traffic congestion by 35%, leading to a decrease in air and noise pollution in the city. The trains are 96% recyclable and 99% recoverable, with no prohibited substances used in their construction, ensuring minimal environmental impact.
Olivier Loison, Managing Director of Alstom India, expressed his pride in this achievement, saying, “The Alstom-built full-stack mobility solutions for Mumbai’s Aqua Line are packed with some of the most sophisticated engineering and technology solutions for Mumbai’s first underground metro. With our 100% made-in-India driverless trains, we are demonstrating that innovation and efficiency can go together. Our longstanding partnership with MMRCL has enabled us to deliver a world-class metro experience that promises to significantly ease the daily commute for millions of Mumbaikars."
