BHUBANESWAR: The Opposition BJP on Tuesday accused the State Government of foisting flood on the State with a 'motive'. Training his guns on Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, senior BJP leader Bijay Mohapatra told mediapersons that the current flood is manmade and the Water Resources Department responsible for the mismanagement of water level in Hirakud.
"The Chief Minister, who is in charge of the Water Resources Department for the last 11 years, is responsible for the flood and he did it with a motive," he charged. The motive was to store water for the industries. However, the Government calculation misfired, the BJP leader said.

Accusing the Government of ignoring forecast by the Meteorological Department and satellite observations about heavy rains in the upper catchments of the Mahanadi river system, he sought to know as to why the water level in Hirakud reservoir was kept at 624 feet, five feet above the prescribed height, on September 1 in violation of rule curve.

Claiming that an engineerinchief (EIC) of Chhattisgarh government told him that timely information about rains and release of water from the reservoirs there were provided to the Hirakud dam authorities, Mohapatra asked the Chief Minister to make public the inputs provided by the neighbouring state to the Water Resources Department before the floods.

He further accused the Government of misleading the people on the quantum of water flow in the river system and the number of people affected.

Garadpur is one such village in Kendrapara district, he informed.

Though the Government claims to have opened over 270 free kitchens, not a single kitchen and relief centre is seen in most of the badly affected areas in Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur districts, he claimed.
