Lucknow: Pay house tax before Aug 16, get 10 pc rebate

The last date for availing 10 pc rebate on house tax has been extended to August 16. According to reports, Lucknow mayor Dinesh Sharma, in discussion with municipal commissioner Rakesh Kumar Singh, agreed to extend the date. On Wednesday, the LMC collected a record Rs 3.03 crore house tax.

Five Lucknow University students bag ICPR fellowship

Five students of the philosophy department of Lucknow University (LU) have received fellowships from the Indian Council of Philosophical Research (ICPR). This is the first time that so many students have received the fellowship in one go. In the past this number remained negligible. Three of the five students were selected for the JRF fellowship and two others qualified for post-doctoral fellowships. This year there were just 10 vacancies for postdoctoral fellowships and 24 for JRF, respectively. LU has bagged five of the total 34 positions.

Lucknow Municipal Corporation pulls down liquor shop near Purana Qila

Acting on the complaints of local residents, the Lucknow Municipal Corporation pulled down a liquor shop run by Mayank Gopal, alleged liquor mafia, in a shanty near Purana Qila overbridge, on Wednesday. The anti-encroachment squad, led by zonal officer Arvind Kumar Rai, razed the shanty in the face of tough resistance.

10 districts in UP under water, about million people affected

Ten districts in UP are still flooded as water level continues to rise in the area because of heavy rains. These areas are spread alongside the Ganga river. Millions of people have been affected by the flood, crop worth lakhs has been destroyed and the toll seems to be rising every day. Police and army are trying their best to provide food and medical supplies in the worst affected areas. According to reports, about 174 people have been killed and 1.6 million people have been displaced by the flood. People in the affected area are being moved to higher safer places. Local streets in Allahabad are flooded with water and as there seems no decrease in the water level, the situation can get even worse.

Gorakhpur Environmental Action Group to organise housing design competition

The Gorakhpur Environmental Action Group (GEAG) is organising a resilient housing design competition. “The online competition encourages architects and students to design a flood-resilient and environmentally-sustainable housing solution for people living in flood-prone areas,” said Jitendra Dwivedi, coordinator of the event.
