Rise in tomato and potato prices along with pulses have caught the consumers unawares.

Triple whammy as dal, tomato & potato prices surge together

Sometimes it's pricey onions driving consumers to tears, at other times, potatoes or pulses.But this summer is different. A triple whammy of scorching tomato and potato prices, alongside pulses -arhar and urad -has wrecked family budgets.

In the last two years, arhar prices have doubled while those of urad have increased by around 120%. Even gram (chana dal), which is produced in large quantities and doesn't usually go ballistic, has climbed 85% in this period in Delhi.

Go online to shop for veggies cheap

Want to buy quality fruits and vegetables at affordable rates? Reach for your smartphone. Online grocers such as BigBasket and Grofers have bucked the trend and kept prices down, while their brick-and-mortar rivals have raised prices of fresh produce. For instance, a kg of onions on BigBasket in the capital is selling for Rs 16 and Rs 18 on Grofers, while a neighbourhood grocer in South Delhi is selling the same produce for Rs 32. In fact, the online prices compare with Rs 17 a kg at Mother Dairy's Safal outlets. For some products such as tomatoes, prices are marginally lower if bought online.

Expands Scope Of Right To Self-Defence

In a significant judgment that expands the boundaries of the right to self-defence, the Supreme Court has ruled that a person would be right in taking the law into his hands if he witnessed his parents or relatives being assaulted.

The landmark ruling came in the case of two persons who had been convicted by the trial court for assaulting some of their neighbours in the villagers.

British Labour MP Jo Cox dies after being shot and stabbed

A 41-year-old British woman MP from the opposition Labour Party was today killed after being reportedly shot and stabbed in her constituency in northern England, a week before the crucial referendum on UK’s EU membership.

Labour MP Jo Cox was holding a meeting with constituents, in her local constituency when an altercation reportedly led to the attack. Cox was rushed to Leeds General Infirmary, where armed police stood guard while medical experts tried to save her life inside.

Report on graft ‘by Sheila Govt’ sent to ACB, says Mishra

Three days after the AAP government announced it had sent the report of a fact-finding committee on water tankers distribution management systems scam to the Lieutenant Governor and the Centre, sources said the report has been forwarded to the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) for investigation.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Vijender Gupta has written to LG Najeeb Jung and alleged the AAP sent the report in a “deceitful manner”, after having “slept over” it for almost a year, only due to pressure from the opposition.

Ishrat papers probe: MHA denies official was tutored

A fresh controversy erupted over the Ishrat Jahan case, with reports alleging “tutoring“ of a witness by a senior home ministry official probing the disappearance of documents and the Centre strongly denying any manipulation of the investigation.

A report in Thursday's edition of The Indian Express had alleged tutoring of a former director in the ministry . Home secretary R K Mehrishi said, “I hotly deny tutoring of witnesses. There was no need to. Files in the home ministry are never lost. They might get misplaced. But I am confident they will be located somewhere.“

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked tax officials to knock on the doors of people whose income statements don’t reflect the size or grandeur of their property, but they must do so in a gentle and friendly manner, a top government official said on Thursday.

Such cold calls by taxmen are part of several suggestions Modi made at a conference of revenue officials, where the Prime Minister also set a target of doubling the country’s taxpayer base to 100 million. He did not give a deadline.

Only 3 Kairana families shifted, that too over crime, reports DM

Shamli district magistrate Sujeet Kumar has contradicted the BJP claim of exodus of Hindus from Kairana. Kumar, in his report to the state government, said that barring three families, who left the west UP town due to extortion or related crimes, the remaining 343 families mentioned in BJP MP Hukum Singh’s list, either had different reasons to leave the area or are still staying there.

Builder fined for delay in delivering flat

The apex consumer panel has asked real estate major Parsvnath Developers Ltd to pay over Rs 42 lakh to a buyer for failing to hand over a flat in Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh, booked around 10 years ago.

National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) also directed the firm to pay an interest of 18 per cent per annum from the date of each payment till the full amount is refunded.

Jadeja in soup for flouting forest norms

The forest department has ordered an inquiry into the incident in which Indian cricketer Ravindra Jadeja got down from his jeep in Sasan Gir and posed for a photograph. Jadeja was accompanied by his wife Reeva and his friends.

Chief conservator of forests AP Singh said Jadeja had visited Sasan Gir on June 14 and June 15.

"We have got photographs that show that he got down from his jeep and took photographs," he said.
