NEYVELI: The Unit 1 of thermal power station-I (TPS-I) of the Neyveli Lignite Mining cum Thermal project completed 50 years of service on May 23. To celebrate the occasion, Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) CMD AR Ansari unveiled the commemorative plaque in a function held at the TPS-I turbine hall on Wednesday.The project, that was inaugurated on May 20, 1957 by former prime minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, comprises six units of 50 MW capacity each and three units of 100 MW capacity each. It was commissioned between 1962 and 1970 in three stages at a cost of Rs 77.83 crore and was part of the Indo-Soviet collaboration.The project was executed as a turnkey project by Technopromexport of erstwhile Soviet Union.This station is the first lignite-based thermal power station in southeast Asia, the first pit head thermal power station in India and largest thermal power station in South India.The plant and machinery were supplied by Technopromexport, Moscow and erected by the NLC under the guidance of Soviet specialists. The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (formerly TNEB) is the sole beneficiary for the power generated in this station.Since its inception the unit has generated 14,302 million units.NLC directors B Surender Mohan, R Kandasamy, J Mahil Selvan and Sarat Kumar Acharaya; I F S, chief vigilance officer, NLC Deepak Srivastava; chief general manager/TPS-I & I Expn B Krishnamoorthy; general manager/TPS-I S Ramachandran and other officials and workers of NLC attended the function to mark the occasion.
