Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government will oppose Tamil Nadu's demand that Central security forces be deployed at the Mullaperiyar dam in Idukki district.
"Under no circumstances, Kerala would accept Tanmil Nadu's move to have the security of the dam entrusted with central forces," Kerala Water Resources Minister N K Premachandran was quoted by PTI as saying.
Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, in a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, had made a request for central forces.
"The dam is located in Kerala and there is no security threat or law and order problem in the area requiring deployment of central forces. This has all along been the state's stand and there is no change in it," Premachandran said.
"This appears to be a strategic move by the neighbouring state to reinforce its claim for raising the water level of the reservoir above 136 feet," he said.
On reports of damage to a parapet wall of the dam, he said the Revenue Divisional Officer in Idukki had gone to inspect the dam in the wake of reports.
Premachandran said he was in touch with Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan, who is in Calcutta attending the CPI-M central committee meeting, on the new development.
