CHENNAI: A non-bailable arrest warrant was issued against an inspector attached to the Race Course police station in Coimbatore for not appearing before a division bench of the Madras High Court in connection with a habeas corpus writ petition, on Tuesday.Originally, while taking on file a habeas corpus writ petition from M Johnson of Thoothukudi seeking the production of his son J Kishore Jaffrin (18) in the court and to set him at liberty, the bench comprising Justices K Mohanram and GM Akbar Ali on February 7 thisyear had directed the inspector to be present in the court on February 14.When the matter was taken up on Monday, the Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) informed the court that the inspector was not present and had sent only a constable on his behalf. The APP also stated that the court’s February 7 order was communicated to the Coimbatore City Police Commissioner with a request to inform the inspector to appear before the court on February 14.The Registry had also despatched the copies of that order on February 8 to the CoP and the inspector.Despite this, the inspector did not turn up.“The non-appearance of the inspector in spite of our earlier directions is nothing but intentional and wilful. It shows the utterdisregard on the part of the inspector to the orders of this court. Hence, a non-bailable warrant is issued to the inspector for hisarrest and production before this court on February 22. The warrant shall be executed without fail by the Coimbatore Police Commissioner or by his subordinates,” the bench said and posted the matter on February 22.The habeas corpus writ petition from Johnson alleged that his son was arrested by the inspector in connection with a theft case and his whereabouts were not known till date.
