New Delhi: The ‘Not in my Name’ campaign has called for a vigil in Delhi this evening to mourn the death of seven Amarnath pilgrims. The vigil will be held at Jantar Mantar, the designated area for protests, at 7 pm.
A post on the Facebook wall of the campaign reads:
“Not In My name campaign gives a call to gather at Jantar Mantar and stand in vigil against hate and in grief with the families of those killed. Please carry posters of #Notinmyname and solidarity with families of those killed. We stand against hatred and our posters too should reflect our stand.”
The campaign hit the headlines for organizing multi-city protests on June 28 to mourn the killing of Junaid, who was stabbed to death by miscreants while travelling by train from Delhi to Ballabhgarh. The protests were held in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata and were attended by thousands of people.
The campaign gathered momentum on social media and by word of mouth under the hashtag #Notinmyname to protest growing incidents of cow vigilantism and lynchings, of which a disproportionate number of victims are Muslims.
The post further read:
“All lives matter and dead bodies should not become part of a politcs that divides people on the basis of religion. The seven dead did not deserve to die and it is only when we stand up and demand an end to this politics of hatred that we can prevent the deaths of innocents going on a pilgrimage or returning from Eid shopping.”
The June protests saw participation by writers, intellectuals and ordinary citizens waving placards and banners calling for an end to lynchings and cow vigilantism.
