Noted burglar Mariyar Bhoothams wife arrested

KOCHI: Noted burglar Mariyar Bhootham’s wife Punitha was nabbed by the North police here. Punitha has been in hiding since the arrest of Mariyar Bhootham in 2008. There have been at least 10 cases filed against her since then.According to the police, Punitha used to assist Mariyar Bhootham in selling the goods stolen by him from the various places in Kochi. The stolen goods were taken to Krishnagiri district in Tamil Nadu and sold there.Mariyar, who lived most of his life in Ernakulam, earned his living from selling scrap items from the age of six. Mariyar who then learned every nook and cranny of the city went on to become one of the most noted burglars in the city.Mariyar, who stayed in Tamil Nadu with his wife, used to arrive from Tamil Nadu in the morning hours via train and stole from various places in Ernakulam. After carrying out the thefts, he used to take an early morning train back to Tamil Nadu. As he used to switch off his mobile phone while travelling, it became very difficult for the police to nab him. However, in 2008, he was caught and booked in at least 18 cases. By then, Punitha went into hiding. Four months ago, the police had arrested Salem resident Marcon and Krishnagiri resident Anthoniyos, to whom the stolen goods such as electronic items and gold were sold by Mariyar. In their circle, Punitha was the last one to be caught, the police said.
