It was a cold Shimla morning and the provocation was hospitalization of a college mate. He was beaten up by students from a rival college over a sitting dispute in a bus. We went in three buses and the casualty was the rival college canteen. A case was registered against 12 of us, we were arrested and as we were being taken to the court we happily sang "We shall over come some day" to be followed by slogans like "what says Bhagat Singh, we shall fight we shall win". Teachers and elders typified it as a case of youth led astray but we had reasons to believe otherwise.
Several years later the case was withdrawn after one of us got selected to the Indian Army. Surely preventing someone from serving the country because of a college brawl wouldn't have been wise.
Now I've added another one. This time under sections 186 and 353 of the IPC for disrupting Gwalior range Inspector General of Police, Vijay Yadav. Yadav was meeting a delegation of Chetna Sharma's relatives outside his office and my colleague Sharad Kapoor was filming it. First Yadav and then his guard pushed the camera and I couldn't help tell him to mind his business. Chetna Sharma was a Sub Inspector with the MP police and she is dead. Her relatives were demanding justice for her.
Chetna's body was found at her police lines residence in District Bhind on November 30 morning. A bullet had entered her body on the left side below the chest and no FIR has been registered till now. Ironically Yadav had personally received the complaint of Chetna's father on November 30 in which it was alleged that the Superintendent of Police of district Bhind, Raja Babu Singh Sengar had played a role in the Sub Inspector's death. Bhind falls in the Gwalior range.
First police said it was a case of suicide but in the absence of any apparent reason for her taking the extreme step it somehow desisted from registering a case. Family members cried foul and wanted a murder case to be registered so the CID was roped in and till the time of writing this piece no case has been registered. The police does not know if Chetna was murdered or if she committed suicide. Preliminary investigations are on.
The case took a dramatic turn on December 21 when a letter written by Chetna Sharma to the National Commission for Women found its way to the media. The letter dated November 29 had serious allegations against Raja Babu saying he had tried to rape her the same day. The letter was typed and not hand written, reason for the police to believe that it could be forged as well.
The police can take its own time in finding out if the distress letter is forged or not but what do we do? The letter has come out of the NCW. So we wait for the police to come out with its findings or tell the world that there is also this letter received by the commission? We chose the latter.
There is a dead body of a lady police sub inspector. There is a bullet fired from her service revolver and the incident happened in the police lines area in a dacoity infested district. Yadav and his fraternity have to answer. Even if Chetna Sharma committed suicide what were the reasons that led her to take that step? Registering cases against those raising the issue would serve little purpose.
