New Delhi: More than 24 hours after CNN-News18 aired a sting operation on a police officer in PoK confirming surgical strikes carried out by the Indian Army, Pakistan's foreign ministry has issued a denial calling it "forged".
A statement issued by a spokesperson of the ministry on Thursday said the police officer in question, Ghulam Akbar, denied having spoken to CNN-News18's Manoj Gupta over the telephone and that it was not his voice on the recording.
"This is a clear indication that certain quarters in India are desperate to prove Indian false claim of surgical strike by hook or by crook," the statement said.
In the telephone conversation aired on Wednesday Ghulam Akbar, the SP of Mirpur in PoK is heard admitting that the surgical strikes had indeed taken place at many sectors in the early hours of September 29.
Manoj Gupta pretended to be 'IG Mushtaq' while seeking details about the casualties of that night.
Akbar said the Pakistani Army was caught unawares by the Indian attack and lost five of its soldiers (CNN-News18 has their names) and that the bodies of unknown number of terrorists were quickly removed from the scene of the attack.
Pakistan's foreign ministry accused CNN-News18 of "twisting and fabricating " the story for "domestic consumption".
The denial is consistent with Pakistan's stand on previous instances involving terrorists operating from its territory. Despite evidence provided by India, Islamabad flatly denied involvement of Pak-based terrorists in the attacks at the air base in Pathankot and the army camp in Uri. When 26/11 attacker Ajmal Kasab was captured, Pakistan denied he was from that country, though media reports later revealed he was from Faridkot.
