THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The controversial references in the new Standard X social science textbook about the Catholic Church should be removed. This was recommended in a report submitted by the expert committee headed by former Additional Chief Secretary D Babu Paul to General Education Secretary James Varghese. The committee found that there were many mistakes in the textbook. The committee also found that the contents in the textbook were prepared only from the Marxist point of view. The committee was of the opinion that the mistakes were not deliberate. However, the textbook was prepared by taking into consideration only one point of view, the committee said. This was when there are different perspectives on history. The Catholic Church opposed the chapters dealing with Renaissance Movement and Religious Reform Movement in Europe, saying that they contained “grossly baseless anti-church contents” and “propagated Marxist political ideology”.The textbook was prepared by the SCERT during the tenure of the previous LDF Government.Following the controversy, the UDF government has set-up a committee headed by Babu Paul.Eminent historian M G S Narayanan has declined to join the three-member panel set up by the State Government to review the social science textbook. Narayanan was not ready to be a member of a committee headed by former bureaucrat Babu Paul as the latter was not a professional historian. The other member of the committee was Archives Department former Director S Raimon.
