MADURAI A huge explosion was averted following the timely detection of an abandoned parcel bomb in a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) bus at K Pudur here on Thursday night. According to police, the crew after completing its routine service drove back to the Government depot at K Pudur around 11.00 pm on Thursday. The maintenance staff, who was engaged in cleaning of buses, found an abandoned parcel beneath a seat around 2.00 am and informed the higher authorities who in turn alerted the police. Immediately, a police team from K Pudur police station rushed to the depot and examined the parcel which contained a detonator, black powder and batteries. However, the bomb detection squad reached the spot and defused the bomb that was not properly activated and destroyed it. There were other buses parked in the depot which also has a gas station. Had the explosion occurred, the entire bus depot would have gone up in flames, sources said.The police should act swiftly to find out the culprits behind this incident. Security must be beefed up at all bus depots, sources added.
