CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has directed the Registry to send a copy of a habeas corpus writ petition alleging custodial torture by the Mangadu police to the State Human Rights commission (SHRC) for investigation and action. A division bench comprising Justices K Mohanram and GM Akbar Ali was disposing of a habeas corpus writ petition from G Deivanai, whose son Ravi was illegally detained in connection with the murder of Ambiga. Contending that Ravi was picked up on Jan 24, kept under illegal detention and tortured, Deivanai filed the petition to produce him in the court and to set him at liberty. However, her son was released on Feb 7 last. After having satisfied with the records, the bench said that Ravi was kept in illegal detention by the Mangadu police. After perusing the medical report, The bench also observed that Ravi was tortured. They ordered the transfer of the case to the SHRC.
