THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: While displaying his hold on the organisational apparatus of the CPM in the state by getting re-elected for another term, Pinarayi Vijayan has become the longest serving leader in the top post of the party. It is the fifth time in a row and for the fourth term that Vijayan is getting elected. So far,he had served for more than 13 years as the state secretary.State Committee member and former MP P Rajendran told Express that Pinarayi Vijayan was elected for a full term for the fourth time.CPM state committee member and MP K N Balagopal said,” It was on September 25, 1998 that Vijayan took over as the state secretary following the demise of then incumbent Chadayan Govindan. It was the state committee which elected him to the remaining term. Following this, he was re-elected to the top post again in 2001 (Kannur), 2005 (Malappuram) and 2009( Kottayam) state conferences. The just concluded state conference here adds to the list”.“The central committee’s stipulation in limiting the term of the secretary of the state and district units to maximum three years will not be applicable this time as it will come into effect only after the next party congress,” Balagopal said.A record of sorts is being tagged to Pinarayi Vijayan with his tenure at the helm of the CPM without a break, next being late E K Nayanar, former Chief Minister, who got a 12 years plus term at the top post, followed by V S Achuthanandan with a stint of around 12 years.
