DEOGARH: Come summer, neighbours clamour for every drop of water with women trudging long distances for a pot of it. It’s a common sight across the region and Deogarh district is no exception. The rural pockets are the worst hit. Reports said of the total 774 revenue villages in the district, only 97 have access to pipe water. These include 43 in Barkote block, 28 in Riamal block besides 26 villages in Tileibani block. On the other hand, the system installed in some villages has been of little use, courtesy low voltage and poor quality of work.Due to sub-standard work, the pipes have developed cracks and leak at many places while the borewells have collapsed or the motor and pump not working, at many other places. As per official reports, the villages where water continues to be scarce despite having pipe system include Bad Manpur, Raitabahal, Rambhei, Jalisuan, Dandasingha, Jharakandhal, Kaliapal, Madhyapur and Dantaribahal in Barkote block, Tuhilamal, Golabandh, Bad Dangaghat, Talkund, Sorpal and Chadeimara in Riamal block besides Sarankhol village in Tileibani block. The official report speaks about non-functioning system in 16 villages of the district, even though unofficial figures are quite high. Likewise, of the total 1,365 tube-wells in Barkote block of the district more than 25 are lying defunct. While more than 20 tube-wells out of 1,459 do not ooze water in Riamal block, the same is true for 15 out of 1,212 tube-wells in Tileibani block.Executive Engineer, RWSS, Gokul Chandra Behera said a meeting was held recently with the WESCO officials to sort out the voltage problem. Poor quality pipes will be replaced as and when they receive complaints, he added.
