New Delhi: The Central Committee on Infrastructure, headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, has paved the way for putting road infrastructure on the fast lane.
This will not only connect important cities but will also give necessary filip to infrastructure sector.
In the big review meeting on infrastructure, the Railways made a presentation on their turnaround story but the Roads Ministry was asked to make haste.
However, the PM's committee hit the high road and approved Rs 15,000 crore of investments in expressways.
Deputy Chairman Planning Commission, Montek Singh Ahluwalia says, "In principal, approval for construction of 1000 km of restricted access expressways. The road ministry will now work out a detailed feasibility report and take it on from there."
Mumbai-Vadodara is a segment that has already been identified. Pre-feasibility studies will be undertaken for expressways connecting Delhi to Chandigarh, Jaipur, Meerut and Agra and Bangalore-Chennai and Kolkata-Dhanbad.
The committee also decided to reduce the time taken for customs clearances at airports.
"With reforms on ports, the Customs clearance there has become much faster. We wish to take similar action for airports," says Alhuwalia.
