New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will lay the foundation stone for India's first National Defence University in Gurgaon on Thursday. The move comes more than a decade after the Kargil Review Committee recommended such a university. Existing institutions such as the National Defence College will be affiliated to the university.

The Indian National Defence University is a dedicated first-of-its-kind institution for training and research in military studies. The proposed institute will be equipped with training and research facilities on all aspects of national security as part of the strategic national policy-making. While one-third of its strength will comprise of civilian students, the remaining seats will be reserved for in-service defence personnel.

The sprawling 200 acre campus will be set up in Binola village with an estimated cost of Rs 300 crore, Deputy Commissioner PC Meena said, adding, land for the purpose has already been acquired by the state government.
