The drive against drunken driving launched by the Hyderabad Traffic Police seems to have had the desired effect on celebrities or at least, that is what the police claim. Going by what they say, not just celebrities but also women and minors are no longer driving in an inebriated condition on the city roads.
“We now find that celebrities are engaging drivers when they return from parties,” said PVS Ramakrishna, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic). The traffic police had caught actor Navdeep and Nikhil Siddhartha a few months back for driving in an inebriated condition. Navdeep had in fact given a tough time to the cops who had to chase him down. Nikhil on the other hand had admitted his fault and donned the hat of a poster boy for the traffic police.
The police attribute the change in the attitude of celebrities to a certain amount of fear and embarrassment. They also believe that their regular checks and counselling sessions for those caught have had a positive impact.
“Nowadays, we do not come across any women driving drunk or even minors. But whether drunk or not, a minor is not supposed to drive and enforcement against them is happening continuously, which has resulted in a positive impact,” said PVS Ramakrishna. Ever since the drive against drunken driving was launched last year, only one woman has been caught till date. That too, three months back.
But this doesn’t mean that people in the city have become sober. In the latest drive, the police booked as many as
172 cases on Saturday night alone. They also seized 124 two-wheelers, 8 three-wheelers and 40 cars. But none of the offenders was a minor. The drive was conducted at about 11 places in the city. Such drives are conducted every week but according to the DCP, due to heavy rains, police personnel have to sometimes shift their focus and identify places which do not get affected by rains.
