Assam Rifles and state police personnel attacked in morning raid, says ‘spokesperson’ of militant group.

New Delhi: Two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel died when militants in Manipur's Ukhrul district on Thursday morning fired at a security team on election duty.

The six-man security team was guarding electronic voting machines and other election material in Kamjong, where the first phase polling was held on Thursday, when militants attacked them. The fate of the others members of the team is not known yet, agencies reported.

A PTI report said a self-proclaimed spokesperson of the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) said over phone that the Manipur People's Army (MPA) had carried out the attack. MPA is the armed wing of the UNLF.

A government helicopter took the other members of the security team, which comprised personnel from Assam Rifles and state police, to safety.

The militants took away the guns of the security team, the UNLF spokesperson said. Kamjong is 80 km east of Imphal.
